Choklit Blog #24: Wow... I haven't blogged in forever... oh well.

It's been so long since I've written a new blog that I forgot my blog even existed. Oops. :)
Anyway, in case anyone who reads this didn't already know, I recently started full-time college and I'm majoring in Culinary Arts, which will soon change to Culinary Arts Baking and Pastry Career Path. What a nice, non-cumbersome name for a major. I'm getting a degree in baking, basically. Bakeshop is my favorite class right now and it's uber fun. But I cut myself on a really sharp knife in that class this past Wednesday. It was funny. And it also started a conversation last night, so it's all good. Nutrition is another awesome class. It's really easy. But I have a nutrition article review due on Tuesday and I haven't finished it yet. But my brain is fried right now from my Sanitation homework, which is another class I love. It's all online and eery week I read a chapter of the book, answer some questions, find some definitions, and submit my answers online. Then I have some easy online quizzes (yes, that means open book) that I get 4 tries on each one. And the quizzes are open until the end of the semester. Right now it's week 6, and the assignment for week 2 just closed. It's easy. Food Production is not bad sometimes, and sometimes it's frustrating and confusing. Intro to Computers is stupid. Just stupid. Purchasing is the class I hate. It's not that it's such a horrible class and that it's insanely hard or anything like that, but it scares me because I always think an assignment will be due before anyone explains it, and then they never are. But I still hate it.
Anyway, last night was awesome. Sanctus Real, Addison Road, and Jason Gray were playing at my church and I was working in the cafe for the second half of the concert. Addison Road played the first half, and they were so good that I bought their CD. Then I went to work in the cafe where I got hit on by a navy guy. Creepy. Jason Gray played while I was working, then Sanctus Real played a few songs before I got back to the concert. I could hear them and watch them on the screen while I was working, though, so it was all good. But it was better when I got to go watch them for real. They were awesome. After the show, I bought Addison Road's CD, a Sanctus Real t-shirt, and a Sanctus Real poster. I thought I got in line to meet Sanctus Real, but then I found out I wasn't in line. So I actually got in line, which the end of was right in front of Addison Road's table. So while I waited in line, I met 2 of the guys from Addison Road (Travis and Jeff), who were cleaning up their merch table. Jeff signed my CD and went back to work, then Travis signed my CD and noticed that my thumb was all bandaged up, so he asked me what happened to it. As I said "Culinary school", Jeff apparently touched the table the wrong way and a lamp fell off. Nothing important happened as a result of that. So I told Travis I cut it at culinary school and he said "Oh, you're in culinary school?" and sounded like he was surprised. Maybe he thought I looked too young to be in college, since technically I am.

Choklit Blog #23: Something that's been annoying me SO MUCH lately.

I'm very annoyed right now. You're probably not wondering why, but I'm gonna tell you anyway. No, it's not because of my English teacher and it's not because of annoying student council "campaign" emails. Yeah those are annoying, but this is REALLY annoying and has been annoying me for a long, long time.
Pretty much every time I get on Facebook, I see people writing on each other's walls or in their status or wherever about how much they miss their boyfriend or girlfriend. I happen to know that a lot of the people who say that see each other like every other day, or at least once a week. They're dating, so they see each other all the time! (And don't think I'm just assuming they see each other a lot... I know they do).
I have to interrupt myself for a second here... ANOTHER STUDENT COUNCIL CAMPAIGN EMAIL JUST CAME IN!!!! STOP SPAMMING ME PLEASE!!!! I'm not voting for someone who sends out emails every day like "Vote for me!! Please!!! I'm a really good choice!! Vote for me!!" In fact, I'm making a list of people to vote for, excluding all of those who annoyed me with their emails. Thank you for not annoying me. It means a lot.

ANYWAY... as I was saying, I'm annoyed by people who keep complaining about missing their boyfriend/girlfriend/whoever because they don't see each other every single day. Why does that annoy me so much?Well let's see... I have 3 best friends. Two of them live in other states and I never get to see them. In fact, I haven't even seen one of them in 7 years! The other one I haven't seen in 5 months. And we weren't even friends when we saw each other 5 months ago! Do I miss them? HECK YES!!! Do I complain about it all the time? UM NO. If I can spend 7 years away from my best friend without posting a status update every day saying "I MISS JANELLE SOOO MUCH!!!! :'( :'( :'(" then of course you can spend 2 days away from your boyfriend without crying your eyes out and telling the whole world how horrible it is that you can't spend every waking moment together!
But I'm not writing this just to yell at people for being lame, or to whine about my friends that I miss. I'm writing this in the hope that those people I'm talking about will read this and realize how good they have it. Instead of crying about missing each other, why not be grateful that you can spend time together? The world is not a perfect place and never will be, so stop acting like it should be. I'm not quite sure if I'll even get to see one of my best friends again for a few more years. Be glad you can see your boyfriend more than that, and look forward to the next time you'll see each other instead of wanting everything RIGHT NOW!!!!
So PLEASE stop complaining about how much you miss each other! You apparently really don't know what it's like to have to miss someone.

Alex and Janelle... y'all rock =]

Choklit Blog #22: 45 things a girl wants, REVISED EDITION!

I was reading some random notes on Facebook the other day when I came across one called "45 things a girl wants but won't ask for." I read it and thought some of it was... kind of lame. I decided to change what I thought needed changing, and add my very critical comments. Enjoy.

45 things a girl wants but wont ask for

1.
Touch her waist.
(Um... why? I personally am just not dying to have someone touch my waist. What's the point? I'm taking this one out and replacing it with: 1. If you can't watch the superbowl together, text her while you watch it.)

2. Actually talk to her.
(YES. DO THIS!)

3. Share secrets with her.
(Do this one too!)

4. Give her your jacket.
(She might ask you for that, actually, but do it anyway.)

5. Kiss her slowly.
(Not every girl wants to be kissed, actually :p)

Are you remembering this?

6. Hug her.
(Hugs are the business. Girls love them. But if she doesn't want a hug, don't try to give her one.)

7.
Hold her.
(Isn't that pretty much like hugging her? I think this was just put here to take up space, and since it's pointless, I'm changing it to: 7. Don't get hung up on being "romantic." Be her friend too!)

8. Laugh with her.

9. Invite her somewhere.

10. Hangout with her and your friends together.
(Um duh, she is your friend.)

11. Smile with her.
(Um... weird. Don't just put on a fake smile every time she smiles because a lame Facebook note told you to. Smiling is nice, but it's not exactly necessary for you to do it every time she does.)

12. Take pictures with her..
(What girl isn't gonna ask for that? I would!)

13.
Pull her onto your lap..
(NOT necessary at all. This could be a bad idea, so I'm changing it. 13. Ask her questions and the require more than a yes or no answer so you can really get to know her.)

14. When she says she loves you more, deny it. Fight back..
(Well you can let her win sometimes!!)

15. When her friends say i love her more than you, deny it.
fight back and hug her tight so she can't get to her friends. it makes her feel loved.
(Don't do the part that's crossed out. This is what some people call harassment.)

Are you thinking of someone?

16. Always hug her and say I love you whenever you see her.
(Hugging is ok, but you don't have to say "I love you" so much. If you're actually reading this you're probably a typical immature teenager and chances are you really don't love her.)

17. Kiss her unexpectedly.
(If you want to possibly be slapped.)

18. Hug her from behind around the waist.
(Trying to get elbowed in the stomach, eh?)

19. Tell her she's beautiful.
(Just don't overdo it. Don't make this and "I love you" your only conversation. That's just lame.)

20. Tell her the way you feel about her.
(Not always a good idea. Be sure she's ready to hear it, unlike my friends... hahaha jk you guys are awesome.)

One last thing you need to do to show her you actually do mean it.
("One last thing" when really there are 25 more. Ha.)

21. Open doors for her, walk her to her car- it makes her feel protected, plus it never hurts to act like a gentleman.
(Just don't do this in a stalkerish way. Walk her to her car--don't follow her to her car.)

22. Tell her she's your everything - only if you mean it..
(If you mean this, get a life. The inability to live without a certain person makes you too weak and too dependent. Who wants to marry a guy like that?)

23. If it seems like there is something wrong, ask her- if she denies something being wrong, it means SHE DOESN'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT- so just hug her.
(This does not mean ask if something is wrong... it means ask WHAT is wrong.)

24.
Make her feel loved.
(Isn't that the point of everything on this list anyway? I think this one can be changed: 24. Give her an awesome theme song. Just not "Girl of the Year" by FM Static because that one is taken!)

25. Kiss her in front of OTHER girls you know!!!!*.
(If you're just trying to make them jealous, you're a loser.)

WE MIGHT DENY IT BUT WE ACTUALLY LIKE AND KINDA WANT YOU TO TICKLE US
(I personally don't. Bleh.)

26. Don't lie to HER.
(Duuuh. Don't lie to ANYONE.)

27. DON'T cheat on her.
(DUH. Did anyone really think that would be a good idea?)

28. Take her ANYWHERE she wants
(Don't be a doormat. :p )

29. Txt messege or call her in the morning and tell her have a good day at work {or school}, and how much you MISS her..
(Wow, something that's actually nice!)

30. Be there for her when ever she needs you, & even when she doesn't need you, just be there so she'll know that she can ALWAYS count on you.

ARE YOU STILL READING THIS? YOU BETTER BECAUSE, IT'S IMPORTANT

31. Hold her close when she's cold so she can hold YOU too.
(I guess this is what comes after #4)

32. When you are ALONE hold her close and kiss her.
(Wait... I thought you were supposed to kiss her in front of other girls. This is confusing and contradictory.)

33. Kiss her on the CHEEK; (it will give her the hint that you want to kiss her).
(Why do you have to give her the hint that you want to kiss her if you just kissed her already? And WHAT'S UP WITH ALL THE KISSING? IT'S REALLY NOT THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE A GIRL HAPPY!! My gosh...)

34. While in the movies, put your arm around her and then she will automatically put her head on your shoulder, then lean in and tilt her chin up and kiss her LIGHTLY.
(And then when you decide to make out, you'll get kicked out. Great job. I'm sure she'll wanna date you again.)

35. Dont EVER tell her to leave even jokingly or act like you're mad. If shes upset, comfort her.
(As long as she's not upset when you do it, why not? I guess not all girls love joking and sarcasm as much as I do :p)

REMEMBER ALL THESE THINGS WHEN YOU ARE WITH HER NEXT

36. When people DISS her, stand up for her.
(Common sense.)

37. Look deep into her EYES and tell her you love her.
(Again, if you don't mean it, DON'T say it. If you don't know what it means, you DON'T mean it.)

38. Lay down under the STARS and put her head on your chest so she can listen to the steady beat of your heart, Link your fingers together while you whisper to her as she rests her eyes and listens to you.
(Don't try this in middle of the day. The sun is bright and you can't see any stars.)

39. When walking next to each other grab her HAND.
(You don't have to hold hands all the time... but if you want to go right ahead.)

40. When you hug her HOLD her in your arms as long as possible.
(If you didn't, would it really be a hug?)

MAKE SURE SHE KNOWS SHES LOVED

41. Call or text her at night to wish her SWEET DREAMS.
(At night does not mean 2 am. I wouldn't suggest doing it at that time... just my opinion.)

42. COMFORT her when she cries and wipe away her tears.
(This would also be a good time to do #23. And when wiping away her tears, try not to smear her makeup. Girls don't like their makeup smeared.)

43. Take her for LONG walks at night.
(Unless she's tired...)

44. ALWAYS Remind her how much you love her.
(Again, DON'T overdo it, and DON'T say it if you don't mean it.)

45.
Tell her she's beautiful.
(This one was already on here so I'm just gonna replace it with: 45. Call her by her REAL name. Don't always call her "baby" or "honey" or "sweetheart." It gets annoying.)

If you think I'm lame now, whatever. I'm just sharing my honest opinion and if you don't wanna hear it, don't read my blog. Have a nice day :)

Choklit Blog #20: My thoughts on "musical evolution"

So. Yesterday a friend posted a video by Simple Plan on my wall on Facebook (thanks JP!), and I had never really listened to Simple Plan before, but I thought they were pretty cool sounding, so I watched a few more of their videos, only to find that their style used to be completely different. I like the new style and all, but... it's not as good as the older stuff. It got me thinking about music and how each band seems to sort of "evolve" over the years... but I guess it would be more like "devolving" since they all seem to get worse. It's like people decide to grow up and want their music to grow up with them, but sometimes that just doesn't work! So many bands start out with a nice raw, edgy, very simplistic style and try to improve it. But they're not improving! How does a group of spikey-haired punk boys ranting that "I'm just a kid, and life is a nightmare" turn into a bunch of posh preppy guys singing pop-rock breakup songs? [NOTE: While I normally can't stand anything I label as "preppy," that's not the fact in this case. I still think their music sounds cool, but I would definitely say they're preppy compared to their old style.] The fact that they sound more "mainstream" and "radio-friendly" doesn't necessarily mean they're better. What happened to music that's actually fun to listen to?!

Other bands seem to be going down a similar path. Stellar Kart, for example, used to be my favorite band. Their first two albums are amazing... catchy, upbeat pop/punk songs with pretty simple lyrics, complimented by two or three slower songs on each record. But by album number three (the same one that seems to be Simple Plan's downfall), they completely changed their style for the most part. Half of the album is too slow to really listen to much, while the other half is still worth the money. But even the good songs are just... different, somehow. And what about their videos? Their earlier videos featured the band jumping around on stage singing "Life is good, eternal life is better" or racing decked-out shopping carts, but their newest video has a story line, during which they "break dance" in spandex and fanny packs. While it may be funny to watch, the band has definitely lost some of the blissful simplicity of a brand-new pop/punk band. But hey, they have cool t-shirts!

After Stellar Kart, Thousand Foot Krutch became my favorite band soon after I bought their latest album "The Flame In All of Us." It was my first TFK CD, so I had no clue what I was missing out on until I bought their second album from 2003, "Phenomenon." It was my favorite CD the second I bought it and I couldn't stop listening to it. It's still one of my favorites after I've bought eleven more albums. Two of those eleven were their first and third albums, "Set It Off" and "The Art of Breaking." After listening to each of them several times, I concluded almost the same thing as with Stellar Kart and Simple Plan. "Set It Off" wasn't exactly their best album. I think the first album being the best is kind of a pop/punk thing. With a little bit harder music, you need a little bit longer to perfect it, and apparently it takes a little bit longer to go downhill... or a lot longer. They started as a punk/rap band with rough vocals and tons of bass in every song. By the next album, they were pure rock... better singing, better instrumentals, but still heavy enough to be insanely likable. On the following album, they seemed to have softened a bit on a few songs, seeing as how "Phenomenon" only had one slow song. There were some slower ones on "The Art of Breaking," but the rock was still there. The album was perfectly laced with insane guitar solos and ended with one of the most awesome rock ballads I've ever heard. Then came "The Flame In All of Us." It's amazing, really, but compared to their other albums, they seem to have lost some of that rock. "What Do We Know", "Favorite Disease", "My Home", and "Wish You Well" pretty much give me musical ADD. The lead singer (Trevor McNevan, my hero!) even talks about "My Home" being their first love song on the special edition DVD. After more than ten years, why write a love song now? They never did before, and they also never had so many songs that slow on one album. But TFK redeems themselves by seriously rocking the rest of the record. Hopefully TFK won't follow the same pattern as I've seen in other bands... I mean, there's a reason they're the best! And they've been around for more than ten years doing this, unlike 5-year-old punk bands who have already experimented with every style of rock and pop out there. But there are those people who think "Set It Off" was the best and by "The Art of Breaking" they were failures. So I guess it's a matter of opinion.

Bands like Pillar, on the other hand, really needed to go through the whole "musical evolution" process. They started kind of like TFK... sort of a rock/rap style, or something along the lines of that. They weren't great in their early years, and they didn't stand out very much. They got better with each album, and did seem to slip into a more mainstream rock style, but it worked for them. Rpb Beckley is better at singing than he is at rapping. They shocked most fans with their release of "The Reckoning" in 2006, because it was so far from their original style. The previous album was mostly singing, with a little bit of rap every now and then and a few songs even had a scream or two at the end. "The Reckoning" was significantly harder and a lot of of the tracks were at least halfway screamed. Fans talked about their parents and other friends and family saying the new record didn't sound "Christian enough" without even listening to the lyrics. Two years later, Pillar released "For the Love of the Game," the album that seems to fit between "Where Do We Go From Here" and "The Reckoning." Now Pillar seems to be the definition of "Christian rock." Maybe it's because they fixed their mistake by going back towards their old style a little more. Not that "The Reckoning" was a mistake--it was awesome, but if they had continued in that direction, they would have turned into Underoath in a few years and probably lost plenty of fans. Or maybe their dedicated fans' musical tastes would have evolved too. Either way, "For the Love of The Game," which portrayed their old style mixed with a few new elements was definitely accepted better than "The Reckoning."

I guess to a certain extent, "musical evolution" can be a good thing, but is it really possibly to keep the same style forever? Probably not, so all music is bound to change at some point (hopefully with the exception of TFK), some much earlier than others. Family Force 5's first album was an amazingly fresh mix of rap, rock, and screamo. Their second album is mostly dance music, some of which shows signs of insanely abused auto-tune. It sounds awesome on some tracks, but "How in the World" seriously did NOT need so much. Both albums still rock, but the first is definitely more creative, diverse, and all around appealing.

But anyway, there are my thoughts on musical evolution. I just thought someone might be interested or just bored enough to read the whole thing. And if you know where I can find some good punk rock, let me know.

Choklit Blog #19: Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

So, it's typical on Thanksgiving to make a list of things you're thankful for, obviously.  Well usually the average American Christian says something like "I'm thankful that Jesus died to save me, I'm thankful that I live in a free country, and I'm thankful for my family and friends."  While that's all good and nice and what not, I get sick of hearing it all the time!  There are so many more interesting things to be thankful for.  So, in an attempt to write a slightly interesting blog for like... the first time... ever, I decided to type 50 things I'm thankful for (you kinda need that many to get past the whole family and friends thing yano...)  So, in no particular order, here we go...

1. Jesus died to save me
2. I live in a free country
3. Mom, Dad, Brent, Mike, and Daisy

Choklit blog #18: I passed out for the first time ever!!!

As you may have read in one of my previous blogs, I almost passed out at my karate class a few weeks ago right after exercising. Well, I still usually feel a little lightheaded and nauseous after the exercises at the beginning of class, but I've never really come close to passing out other than that one time. That's why I just assumed I would be ok yesterday at class when I started seeing green and blue spots everywhere and feeling more nauseous than usual. When my vision started getting really bad (as in, there were more green and blue dots and I felt like I had been staring at a million-watt lightbulb), I thought about asking to sit down like I did last time, but I didn't want to do that again since this time I was sure I would be fine. Unfortunately, by the time I changed my mind about sitting down, I could hardly see and would have never found my way off the mat. Joy was standing next to me and asked if I was ok and I said no, just as one of my knees buckled. I stood back up straight, thinking it would somehow make me ok in just a second... but it's a good thing Joy knew better and caught me before I fell over. At this point, my vision was completely gone and I think my eyes closed, but I'm not sure. I felt myself being dragged across the room or something... I'm not exactly sure. I remember feeling like I was moving and seeing blue and green dots everywhere. I had no clue where I was or what was going on, and I'm not sure how long I was conscious and how long I was unconscious (or if I even really was... I'm not completely sure, but I think i must have been). Then I felt myself being laid down on the floor and heard my teacher saying stuff like "Bring me a clipboard. Go get her some water. Get me that ice pack," to some other people's moms who were there. I opened my eyes and I could see again and I felt ok, so I told them I was fine but they all said I wasn't. After about 20 minutes (maybe more) they let me go back to class because most of the color had come back to my face and lips. I was completely fine after that, so I don't know what happened. And apparently my face and lips were blue at first for about 45 seconds... I don't know what's up with that either.

I went to see a doctor about it today, but the only thing I found out is that I weigh ten pounds more than I thought I did. I have to go back tomorrow so they can run a bunch of tests to see if I have heart problems, and I think some other problems like diabetes (I know she mentioned that, but I'm not sure if I'm being tested for it, or if that's already been ruled out). I can't imagine why I would have heart problems tho... I mean, my dad only has about a million! So yeah... I can't eat anymore until after that appointment so I'm hoping to go at like 7:30 am (if not, I'll probably starve to death. Then it won't matter if i had heart problems). But even if I do, it's not like something that's gonna kill me, thank goodness. But then again, considering the fact that Barack Obama was just elected President, it might have been better if... oh nevermind. I was hoping to get my mind off the election by writing this blog, but I guess that was an epic fail. Kind of like our country will be in... grrrrrrr... *stops typing*
